Atlanta Youth Rugby (AYR) put on its first annual ‘TRY RUGBY’ Open House yesterday at the Warren Boys & Girls Club (BGC), drawing over 150 kids and parents to a morning filled with drills, rugby education, and donuts!
Said Gail Johnson, Warren BGC’s Executive Director, “It is so great to see all the AYR kids returning and new faces from AYR’s after school programs here, out on our new turf field.” U8 Coed, U10 Coed, U12 Coed, and U14/U16 Boys all rotated drills and skills scrimmages, led by AYR’s dedicated team of coaching staff featuring Life University 2016 National Champions Duncan Van Schalkwyck and Neethling Gericke.
Also present was AYR Board member and IRB-certified referee Russ Wofford, who gave a Rugby 101 seminar to interested parents, who now know what a ruck is and the difference between a fly half and a scrum half.  AYR and Rugby Georgia sponsor 21st Century Financial provided coffee, hot chocolate and Krispy Kreme donuts for everyone present.
“We are thrilled to see so many boys and girls of all ages coming out on this beautiful fall day.  AYR’s strong sense of community is what makes these great events possible”, said Brittany Fenning, Board member and designer of all of AYR’s marketing presence.  U12 Coach David Spencer chimed in: “We love to see so many kids out here, especially offseason from football. Offensive linemen who might never touch a football get to run with the receivers and develop their passing.  Rugby truly builds fitness and field skills applicable to most every sport.”
A beautiful morning for rugby!
