AYR FAQ

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT RUGBY?

Check out the resources HERE for information about rugby – the newest Olympic sport!

HOW MUCH CONTACT IS INVOLVED IN ATLANTA YOUTH RUGBY? IS ANY RUGBY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY?

No experience is necessary to join AYR.  All players will be taught safe tackle and scrum form in controlled settings. U19, U16, and U14 teams will play contact rugby. U10 primarily will play touch rugby, but will include tackles within grade if the Head Coach determines players are ready. U8 Coed will play touch or flag.  When playing other teams, AYR will decide on touch vs. contact with input from the other teams.

WHAT DOES THE REGISTRATION FEE COVER? ARE THERE EXTRA EQUIPMENT COSTS?

Players should wear soccer or rugby cleats (no football cleats), compression shorts, and bring a mouth guard to all practices and matches. If rugby shorts and socks are needed, they can be additionally purchased at registration for $20/set.  We will use the same shorts and socks every year.

The registration fee ($200 for U12s, $250 for U14s and up, $150 for U8s and U10s) includes four months of rugby training, a jersey, ball, t-shirt, player ticket to the AYR Banquet, and required USA Rugby membership with supplemental insurance for every player. Registration fees also help the team cover field rentals, coaching stipends, referee hires, trainers, and administrative costs. Our goal is to give our kids the most authentic rugby experience possible.

WHERE IS PRACTICE HELD?

Practices are held on Saturdays at Warren Boys & Girls Club (map) and on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Central Park (map).

WHEN IS PRACTICE?

ALL SIDES:  Saturday mornings 9AM – 12PM at the Warren Boys & Girls Club (map) Practice times are on a staggered basis with younger sides starting at 9AM, older sides 10:30AM.

U12s:  Additional practice at Central Park (map) Monday evenings 6:30PM – 8:00PM

On weeks with Saturday matches (or Fridays for older sides), the team playing in the match won’t have Saturday practice. We take breaks over Thanksgiving and winter holidays, following the Atlanta Public School holiday schedule.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE MATCHES?

Practices will include intra-squad scrimmages.

A preseason tournament and skills camp will be held at Life University on December 10th with other leagues.

Standings games begin in January and are versus Georgia Rugby Union (GRU) teams in Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Etowah and likely others as we are growing rapidly as a league.

All sides attend Ruggerfest near Charlotte NC, March 4th/5th 2017.  Playoffs for U8 – U12 will finish by mid-March; u14 and up by mid to late April.  Schedules will be announced by November 15th.

WHAT ABOUT TOURNAMENTS?

All teams will play at Ruggerfest in Charlotte, North Carolina March 4th – 5th, 2017.  GRU playoffs are in mid-March for U8 – U12; mid-April for U14 and up.

WHAT ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL BOYS?

We will have a handful of U19 boys playing with our U16 squad.  They will be able to play in non-tournament games, for tournaments like Ruggerfest we will form a combined squad with other GRU teams.  In 2017-2018 we will have a full U19 boys side.
